Tiger Beer

A quick beer review. Tiger Beer brewed by Asia Pacific Breweries in Singapore is a typical Asian lager, but specifically found at Thai restaurants, in my experience.

The beer pours a pale golden and held a somewhat substantial foamy head. The glass was chilled, which real beer connoisseurs might frown upon because the condensation can dilute and affect the flavor of the beer. But you know, I'm sitting in a Thai restaurant on an 85 degree day with a $3 imported lager in an ice cold glass, so who gives a shit?

This beer is very light bodied with a crisp and tight carbonation. Virtually no sweetness, just a light citrus hoppiness and notes of something like the skin of a green apple. Refreshing and highly drinkable. I'd probably reach for a Euro lager like Stella first, but I'd definitely take this over most American macro lagers, and I'd have to really sit down to compare it to the Jap lagers.

All in all, it was refreshing with my Pad Kee Mao.

Next time I'm out for Thai I'll see if Tiger's available...I've steered clear of most Asian beers since a particularly foul experience with a stinky bottled brew at a Chinese-Viet place. The Tiger you described, however, sounds delicious and appropriate for spicy food pairings. My opinion on the Jap macros is that they're nondescript...What about nihon micros? Are there any? The only name I've seen here besides the biggies is Hitachino.

I drink the Singha lager when at a Thai place but I think only because of the (when in Rome)habit.

One word: Singha. Even after all these years, it's still an excellent beer and generally in good condition. You should be able to look through the bottle to the back side of the label for the bottling date (dd/mm/yy).

The brewery that produces Tiger also produces Anchor (no longer available here for obvious reasons) and ABC Stout, which was once a very strong, bottle-conditioned and incredible beer but has been dumbed-down substantially.

as noted by jessica, they are sold at plaid pantry's, i noticed it when i stopped by for some beer on my way home from work (after reading this), and i agree that it's definitely better than american lagers, although i'd personally choose tiger over stella.
